Album Review: BEAST- Good Luck

BEAST! *B2uty flailing*
K-Pop’s perfect boygroup BEAST are back, this time with a mini album! Knowing BEAST and the consistently high standard of music they bring, Good Luck is something to look forward to.

So, let’s go!

We Up
First song of the mini, and it’s We Up. BEAST promoted this one a little too, alongside Good Luck. A great song you can move to, with a deep bass line and easy vocals that aren’t trying too hard. This song has a real Michael Jackson feel to it. It’s addictive, and really enjoyable.

Good Luck
Title track, main track. This song is great. Upbeat, strong, without being over-the-top. Some have accused BEAST of always sticking to one genre, but Good Luck is nothing like BEAST’s staple sound of Fiction, or Midnight. And BEAST pull it off really well, too. I like the Yoseob-Hyunseung combination in the chorus. The members all sound amazing in this, and Junhyung’s rap is good.
All in all, a good title track. One of the best comebacks of 2014 so far, if not the best.

Dance With U
Another upbeat song following We Up and Good Luck. BEAST’s dance songs always have a unique sound to them, and Dance With U is no exception. This album is really a way of showing that BEAST is not stuck in any way– new combinations in the songs are showing, like in this one. Junhyung’s rap is amazing in this song, too. A couple of more lines to Dongwoon would be appreciated, though.

Not Anymore
Alternative title: No More. Pre-released digitally before Good Luck, this song is more typical BEAST flavour. Calm RnB-style ballad. This song is one for vocals to stand out, and Yoseob and Dongwoon sound particularly good in this. I love how much Junhyung has changed and adapted– not only in his composing and producing, but his rapping and singing as well.

History
Another slow-ish song after Not Anymore. This one is a very typical RnB song– smooth, easy-listening. The chorus is a little powerful, and the song showcases some good vocals, one of BEAST’s standout charms. We also get a very Junhyung rap. It’s quite an emotional song.
While the rest of the songs on Good Luck were composed by Junhyung, this one is member Kikwang's composition!

By Your Side At Night
The song initially seems quite typical, but it is quite unique, particularly the chorus. It’s a straight beat soft pop song, but the chorus has a strangely retro style to it, completely different to the rest of the chorus. Yet somehow the song still manages to flow together perfectly. Yoseob, particularly, sounds beautiful in this. The song has a Kikwang-Hyunseung-Yoseob combo in chorus, which sounds great.

Sad Movie (Korean version)
The Korean version of BEAST’s Japanese release Sad Movie ends the mini. This song is just so many layers of perfection. Junhyung’s singing, Yoseob and Hyunseung in the chorus (this combination is prevalent through the album; I like it). It’s emotional, beautiful, never boring. The most amazing song to round out this mini album.Yong Junhyung, you are a genius. These are all Junhyung's compositions (except History), but this song is a masterpiece.

Rating: 9/10
Favourite Song: Sad Movie (Korean Version)
Least Favourite Song: History (sorry Kikwang~)

This mini album is beyond gold. BEAST are seriously at the top of the top when it comes to good music in K-Pop. I can’t find a flaw in this. Upbeat dance songs? Beautiful sad songs? Soothing music? All there, all done expertly. And all done by the members themselves! What more could you want?

I absolutely recommend this album, and you’d be missing out if you didn’t check them out on iTunes.
